What is ELM327 ?

ELM327ELM327
ELM327 28SDIPELM327 28SOIC

  • The ELM327 is an enhancement of the famous OBD-II interpeter chip family ELM320, ELM322 and ELM323. These ELM chips are used as basic IC for diagnostic interfaces between a compliant OBD-II/EOBD car and a common PC/laptop/notebook.
  • The ELM327 combines for the first time all other ELM chips in a single chip and supports further more the CAN protocols (ISO 15765-4 with 500 kbps and 250 kbps with 11 Bit and 29 Bit IDs).
  • The ELM327 consists of all the experience made with several thousands ELM320, ELM322 and ELM323 chips in use. This development shows again the leading position of the producer. Up to now the ELM320/322/323 chips have been the most powerful OBD-II interpreters.
  • The worlds largest offer for OBD-II software is written for ELM chips.
  • Answers to frequently asks questions can be found in the FAQ for ELM327.

What is new with the ELM327 ?

  • Combining of the ELM320, ELM322 and ELM323 chips in a single chip.
  • CAN protocols (ISO 15765-4 with 500 kbps and 250 kbps with 11 Bit and 29 Bit IDs).
  • Therefore 9 supported OBD-II protocols with variations.
  • New: now also SAE J1939 CAN protocol.
  • Two user-definable CAN protocols.
  • Application configurable CAN masks and filters.
  • Programmable headers.
  • Enhanced data rate with 500000 baud RS232 communication, changeable to common RS232 baud rates.
  • Adaptive timing automatically adjusts ST timeouts.
  • 256 bytes RS232 send buffer to avoid data lost.
  • Change of the RS232 pins for easy use of standard interface ICs like MAX232 or USB to RS232 convertors.
  • RS232 handshake signals (RTS in and Busy out, hardware handshake).
  • ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4 can switched between 9600 baud and 10400 baud for experimental use.
  • ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4 slow initiation address can be varied.
  • Control over key word checking.
  • KWP protocols can transmit 3 or 4 byte headers.
  • Unlimited length of received OBD-II data packets.
  • Send of 8 byte OBD-II data.
  • Integrated voltage measurement for monitoring cars battery voltage.
  • Function for calibration of measured car battery voltage.
  • Automatic search for OBD-II car protocol.
  • Possible shut off automatic protocol search and specify desired protocol.
  • Possible shut off a protocol at any time.
  • Internal EEPROM saves last successful used protocol.
  • Low voltage protection avoids problems at low voltages.
  • Automatic data formating.
  • Schmitt trigger OBD-II inputs for avoiding disturbance.
  • Memory output command to show sended or received OBD-II messages.
  • Programmable wake-up signal (connection hold signal) for ISO 9141/14230.
  • Warmstart command for fast reset.
  • Now configurable with 73 AT commands the most flexible OBD-II chip on the market.
  • 26 programmable parameters.
  • Monitor mode MA at power up.
  • Source (tester) address changeable.
  • Receive addresses independently setable.
  • CAN flow control configurable for CAN-IDs and data bytes.
  • Complete control over in-frame responses (IFR).
  • This large functionality destinates the chip for all OBD-II application from experimental usages up to ECU simulators.
