What are ELM-Systems?

• ELM-Systems are used to connect a car with a common computer/laptop/notebook, a pocket-pc or even a smartphone to analyze the electronic controls of the car. It consists of an electronic interface and an appropiate software to connect via the standard OBD-II diagnostic connector of the OBD-II compliant car.
• The interface is based on a special chip from the ELM-IC family (ELM320, ELM322, ELM323, ELM327).
• The first circuit for OBD-II ISO protocol with ELM323 chip was introduced in Europe from Gerhard Mueller (CarCode Mueller), see articles in magazine Elektor issued 10/2002, 11/2002 and 12/2002.
• Originals are available from the developper CarCode Mueller from distributors CarCode-eShop , Plug'nPerf (distribution France) and Omega.fi (distribution Finland).
• It is primarily a system for the hobbyist but more and more used by car shops now as a cheap solution for car diagnostic. Since its introduction in Europe in 2002 there are more than 6000 systems in use now.
• This success is based on the greatest software pool available for such a system and its further development. Here some highlights of the past time:
